Torre del Mar is a coastal town in the municipality of Velez-Malaga in the region of La Axarquía in the province of Malaga. It is located 35 kilometers east of Malaga, the provincial capital.
The tourism sector is the main productive sector of the municipality, Velez-Malaga, followed by agriculture, noted for the production of subtropical crops such as mango, custard apple and medlar, and especially, avocado, that Vélez- Malaga is the largest producer of Spain. In addition, the Port of La Caleta moors has the largest fishing fleet in the province.
The name of Torre del Mar comes from a watchtower with a defensive history back in the tenth or eleventh centuries, during the Muslim occupation of southern Spain.
